OVERVIEW: Begun in 1957, Lutheran High School South is presently in its 50th academic year. Lutheran South educates for excellence in a Christ-centered environment, preparing youth for leadership in service to the church, the home and the world. With the expressed purpose of preparing students for post-high school educational experiences, Lutheran South perennially sends upwards of 98% of each graduating class on to such experiences, the vast majority of those being in degree-bearing programs at both local and nationally-renowned universities. In 2006, one National Merit Finalist and two commended students graduated. The Class of 2007 currently has one National Merit Semi-finalist and six National Merit commended students.
Students at Lutheran South can earn college credit through more than 20 courses offering either dual credit through Saint Louis University or the opportunity to take Advanced Placement exams. In addition to a wide variety of elective courses, students take theology classes each year. Daily worship experiences and service opportunities are also part of the Lutheran South experience.
In the 2006-07 school year, Lutheran South has 552 students served by 51 professional staff, including teachers, counselors and administrators. LHSS has a very diverse co-curricular program, including 39 athletic, cheerleading and dance squads; intramural activities; drama presentations; the Messengers, a worship-through-drama group; a First Robotics team; a mathematics team; mock trial; anime’ club; academic games team; ceramics club and an award-winning student council.
Lutheran South is particularly known for its music program. Three choral music groups, two of them audition-based, and three instrumental groups, two of them also audition-based, utilize the gifts of nearly one-third of the student body. In addition to their class work, these students present concerts throughout the year, enhance campus worship and represent the school in Association congregations.
