Students become prepared for medical professions

In March, five Lutheran North students interested in medicine received hands-on field experience through “Saturday Scholars Academy,” a program through Washington University. They researched diseases and learned about systems of the body with other area high school students interested in medicine. They also researched diseases and their effect on the human body, and presented their findings to the rest of the assembly.

The Crusaders were encouraged to participate by Lutheran North’s Counseling Center.

“Our counselors give one-on-one attention to students for scholarships, college applications, and finding the right internships to prepare you for your career,” Joe Shannon (LHSN ’16) said. “Because of their help, I now have a head start on my career.”

Joe has also earned his Pharmacy Tech License, and works in the pharmaceutical department of a local retailer. It’s all part of his plan to help people through pharmacy and medicine.

“Ever since I’ve been little, I’ve wanted to be a pharmacist,” Joe said. “Helping people receive medical treatment makes me feel like I make a difference in their lives.”

In April, the five students traveled to the University of Missouri-Columbia to see what it takes to be medical student. It was yet another way that Lutheran North prepares students for excellence in college and beyond – especially for students interested in a career in medicine.

“Because of their help, I now have a head start on my career,” Joe said. “Ever since I’ve been little, I’ve wanted to be a pharmacist. Helping people receive medical treatment makes me feel like I make a difference in their lives.”
