Spanish Students Excel in National Spanish Exam

Several world language students at Lutheran South earned national recognition for excellent performance on the 2016 National Spanish Examinations in April. Of the 39 students who took the test, 29 scored an honorable mention or better. Three students achieved a gold medal, placing them in the 95th percentile of all testers.

Despite a legacy of excellence in foreign language academics, earning three gold medals is unprecedented at Lutheran South, and is considered an outstanding success for a school to achieve.

Students from Lutheran South earned a total of three gold, three silver and six bronze medals along with 17 honorable mentions.

“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 160,000 students participating in 2016.”

Students from Lutheran South were taught by Spanish teachers Christina Iles and Liane Figur.

“I am so proud of all of my students,” Spanish teacher Christina Iles said. “Although I have tremendous confidence in each of my students, I could never have dreamed of as many medal winners and honorable mentions as they achieved, due to the test’s difficulty. They worked very hard to prepare for this test, and it paid off. They each took the gift for language that God gave them, and added their dedication and resolve, and the results were outstanding.”
