Preparing for a Career in Medicine

Starting in August, a new class will be introduced as part of a three-course Health Professions Core, allowing Lutheran South students a competitive edge when applying to collegiate medical programs. School nurse and former hospital administrator Christine Wilson will teach the Medical Careers Exploration to students interested in the field of medicine.

“By doing this, students will have the capability of getting into their college of choice and being successful in the medical field,” Wilson said. “Not only do we want the students to investigate various medical career options, but we want them to learn basic medical skills, allowing them to have the extra advantage to getting into the college of their choice.

Students will learn basic information as well as necessary skills for a career in medicine, including CPR, first aid and how to take vital signs. The second course will be in partnership with Maryville University, and will be a dual-credit course in medical terminology. The proposed third course could include an internship in a hospital for high-achieving students in the first two classes.

During the 2016-2017 school year, 60 students will take Medical Careers Exploration. One of them is senior Kate Hendrickson, a Future Professionals in Medicine club member who plans to become an athletic trainer. Kate is the president of Lutheran South’s newly formed chapter of HOSA, a Future Health Professionals organization that will take the place of Future Professionals in Medicine. She appreciates having these opportunities at Lutheran South.

“Future Professionals in Medicine allowed us to go on one to two field trips a year and to have guest speakers at meetings,” Kate said. “I believe this course and HOSA will help Lutheran South students be prepared for the future because we will have a better understanding when we go into athletic training programs in college.”
